Spring Lawn renovation before and after

1. Meticulous Spring Lawn Renovation Delivering Vibrant Results

The Goal

Our goal for this spring lawn renovation was to repair damage caused by a puppy from the year before and to also level off most of the low spots so the garden had a uniform slope in the back garden and the front didn’t dip between manhole covers in the front lawn.

The Problems

The customer had a heavily damage rear lawn from a puppy last year and had failed to get the patches filled in.

There were a number of highs and lows on an already sloping lawn in the rear garden.

The front lawn had manhole covers which were poorly set to the levels of the lawn and some low spots which just meant it didn’t look good.

There was an issue with moss on a part of the lawn as it was quite shady over the winter months.

The Process

To begin this spring lawn renovation we scalped the lawn as short as possible to show the high and low spots. We had been around a 6 weeks prior where we applied a granular fertiliser which contained iron which helped blacken the moss before we would start the renovation.

The lawn was then scarified heavily in two directions before being cut again to remove all the debris from this lawn. Hollow tine aeration was then carried out much to the disappoint of the homeowners dog. Although he did seem to take great joy in stealing the cores which came out of this lawn. This was then collected up giving us a base for spreading top dressing on.

The top dressing used here was Lawn Dressing from Oakley Turf Farm. It’s a very sandy mix of medium and coarse sand and top soil which will help improve drainage of the lawn.As we were doing the front and back lawns we ordered two bulk bags. This is a really nice top dressing to work with as it spreads easily and levels nicely. The dressing was then spread across the lawn by placing small piles roughly every square meter before being spread by our super large lawn lute.

We used a 48″ lawn lute as it helps to cover the larger low spots with ease. The top dressing was worked in filling most of the holes from hollow tining (aerating). Once we were satisfied with the level of the lawns we got to applying the new seed. We opted to use Boston Seeds as our seed supplier using their Hard wearing Lawn Seed for the rear garden and their Fine Lawn Seed for the front.

We had discussed with the customer their needs and wants for both lawn, the front was to be the show stopper as such for people walking past and the neighbours. The back needed to be a lot tougher to handle entertaining and the dog. We sowed the seed, added a little more topdressing to ensure the seed had good contact with the new or existing soil and watered before leaving the customer instructions on watering. We kept in touch whilst the seed began to germinate and came back on a couple of occasions to check progress ourselves.

The Result

The results of this spring lawn renovation is that the customer now has a very level lawn with a tough and hardwearing blend of grass species for their rear garden. The lawn is in great condition and is bringing the customer and their dog joy. The front lawn after this spring lawn renovation is a real show stopper now, it’s almost levelled completely and will be topped with some extra dressing in the autumn as part of our service. We did ensure the customer was aware that the front would likely settle a little as we had such a lot of ground to make up.

The photos are a 1 month timeline from starting this spring lawn renovation to handing over to the customer. We will be going back to check up later in the year and to give it a little bit of extra care this autumn.
